About Innate Scents animal therapy
Founder Seema Bhattessa
Seema Bhattessa has spent many years in the front line of human self-medication as a practicing pharmacist; now dedicating her time and expertise on animal self-medication behaviour, also known as zoopharmacognosy. After a childhood growing up in Kenya, Seema cultivated a deep respect and passion for wildlife and nature.
More recent years have seen Seema consolidate her love of nature and passion for animals, through formal qualifications and training in complimentary animal health, teaching owners how to improve the well-being of their animals, more in line with nature.
“My profession has evolved over the years with a respect for both Western and traditional, natural medicine. In fact, many of the currently used pharmaceuticals are derived from plants. Historically, natural drug discovery was trialled by our ancestors, who would follow their observations of animals in the wild and their selections of the wild remedies they used for health maintenance, and health restoration”.
As well as founding Innate Scents, Seema finds time to work with an equine rescue centre where her remedies are used to great effect, in addition to volunteering her services to the Downland conservation group in Surrey.
What is Zoopharmacognosy?
Zoopharmnacognosy is an animal behavioural science of how wild and free roaming animals locate, identify and utilize organic sources in their natural environment such as aromatic plants, algae, soil minerals etc. that have healing properties and are beneficial to them in maintaining and restoring their own health, as a preventative health measure to resist disease and illness or as a self-preservation behaviour. Domestic animals including livestock are still able to call on this innate response if they feel the need. Unlike wild free roaming animals, domestic and confined animals often no longer have access to environmental remedies.
About Innate Scents animal therapy
This therapy allows animals to self-select from a range of natural remedies they innately recognize and in their own time and allows them to reconnect with healing instincts honed over many thousands of years. Such empowerment has been shown to increase well-being and activity levels, assist with positive disease transformation, help reduce symptoms such as pain or anxiety and accelerate the natural healing process. The remedies offered to individual animals are all derived from sources in the natural environment and are designed to sync with animals’ innate responses and help promote healing mechanisms.
The success of this therapy relies on animals relating to scents and sensations that are natural to them and combines the principles of zoopharmacognosy with human professional knowledge of the remedies themselves. By identifying which remedies are appropriate and safe to offer individual animals, together with a genuine concern for animal health and wellbeing, allows us to achieve optimal results safely and effectively.
Stress in humans is now known to cause or exacerbate many physical illnesses. Similarly, environmental stress may also affect an animals’ physical health. This therapy helps to restore the body’s natural balance, supports the animals’ immune system, helping to prevent disease or reduce the symptoms of an illness should they occur, whilst offering the animal both physical and emotional support they may be in need of.
About the remedies used in this therapy
Quality treatments produce quality results. Remedies that are offered to animals on a self-selection basis are derived from the natural environment in which animals have evolved, and include but not limited to grasses, tubers, minerals, algae, plant extracts and essential oils. All of the remedies used in this therapy are of the very highest unadulterated quality and organically sourced where possible.
Is this method safe?
Over time evolution has changed both animals and plants to interact to their mutual benefit and Zoopharmacognosy has been practiced for thousands of years, so withstands the test of time.
This approach of facilited zoopharmacognosy has an excellent safety profile when used correctly and with knowledge of the individual remedies themselves, their indications and appropriate use in health conditions being addressed. Particularly because the selection, method of administration, dose, and length of treatment are all determined by the animals themselves. Such treatments are intended to broaden the idea of therapy, rather than substitute for traditional professional veterinary care.
No animal is put at risk or forced to participate in this self-selection process and is with consent and / or close coordination with the animal’s vet.
